Kyneton’s Cathouse Players are preparing to put on a gripping comedy-thriller this month.

The cast will perform Ira Levin’s Deathtrap – a play characterised by plot twists, humour, deceit and murderous intent.

The 1978 ‘play within a play’ holds the record for the longest-running play of its genre on Broadway.

It tells the tale of playwright Sidney Bruhl, who is struggling to get out of a creative slump after writing a number of successful Broadway thrillers.

After reading the script of ‘Deathtrap’ written by aspiring playwright Clifford Anderson, Bruhl jokes to his wife that if Anderson won’t agree to joint authorship he will kill him and claim the play as his own.

The suspense mounts when Anderson arrives at Bruhl’s home later that night.

Directed by Bette Sartore, the theatre group will perform shows from Saturday, April 21 until Sunday, April 29 at Kyneton Masonic Theatre, 7 Yaldwyn Street West. Tickets cost between $20-$25 and include pre-show sherries and interval refreshments.
