Sunbury honours club heroes

Sunbury Cricket Club honoured 27 past and present players, committee members and coaches at the club’s 150th anniversary celebration earlier this month.

The inaugural members of the club’s hall of fame were announced in front of a crowd of more than 150 people who came to celebrate the milestone.

Roar secretary Marty Kelders said it was an amazing night and they would look to hold annual dinners to induct more members into the hall of fame.

Kelders gave guests on the night a history of the club, with the club one of, if not the oldest sporting club in Sunbury.

The club won its first premiership in 1952-53 having joined the Gisborne and District Cricket Association in 1923.

Seven past players Ron Forbes, Clyde White, Bill Morrison, Doug Smith, Dean Surkitt, Neil White and Scott Yardley all spoke about their time at the club, with some experiencing the joy of reminiscing about premierships.

Among some of the stories, was how all four Sunbury teams were once in the same grade, the 1992-93 season when the club won three out of the four premierships and rise of junior players through the senior ranks

In a special occasion for the club, all but one of the 1969-70 team were in attendance.

The big moment of the night was the naming of the inaugural inductees into the Hall of fame.

Seven of the inductees are already life members of the club.

The inductees are Heath and Keith Boffey, Mathew and Travis Botten, Ian McPherson, Bill Morrison, Paul O’Farrell, Matthew Schilling, Michael Corcoran, Doug Smith, David Cordy, Dean Surkitt, Doug Cue, Ian Theodore, Brendan Doyle, Patrick Tyler, Darryl Finlay, Andrew Warne, Glenn and Colin Hatty, Marty Kelders, Paul Webber, Neil and Clyde White, Adam Kirk, Scott Yardley and Richard Lee.
