Gisborne is looking to add further talent to its women’s cricket program.
The Dragons play in the CV Women’s Community Cricket Shield and have struggled with numbers early in the season.
Dragons’ women’s cricket co-ordinator Sarah Gunn said the side had played the first two rounds with a player down.
“We have a core group, but with players retiring, moving about and work, we don’t have a full team every week.
“We have a lot of juniors coming through, but they’re a bit young to play in the seniors and there are only about five to six players available on Sundays.”
Gunn said being a player down had had an impact on the field.
“When you play the top sides, they can get a lot of balls through the field,” she said.
“If we had the extra person, we might get them out a little quicker. With batting, you are essentially 1-0 before you start.”
Gunn says the Dragons will welcome girls who want to join up.
“They can come down to our practice sessions and be at any fitness level. We play T20 and one-day games, and train every Thursday.
“Any level of experience is welcome.
“We have a whole team of girls at under-12 level.”
The Dragons enjoy being back in the Shield division.
Due to a lack of teams playing the shield division last season, those participating were split between lower north-west and south-east divisions. The Dragons lost the T20 and one-day grand finals to Darebin in 2014-15’s north-west competition.
“A few teams folded and there were not enough teams in the competition so we had to go down a grade,” Gunn said. “With more teams this year we’re back in the higher division. It means we have to travel more, but the games are better for us”.
After starting the season with two losses, the Dragons is on the winners list taking the points in the T20 double header on the weekend.
In the first game they beat Mt Martha in a T20 match on Sunday, making 4-137 off 20 overs while its opponent managed just 6-101.
In the second game they defeated Darebin.
Gisborne’s men’s side will need quick wickets to beat Riddell in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. The Dragons succumbed for just 129 and at stumps on day one Riddell was 1-21.
