Club Sunbury’s Bowls Victoria weekend pennant division 1, section 1 season came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday.

Having finished second and secured a home semi final, Club Sunbury was confident of making it through to the grand final.

But a late comeback would fall short, with Club Sunbury losing to Kingsbury 79 (14)-78 (4).

Club Sunbury’s David Glennon said the group was pretty dejected after the match.

“They were 14 shots down after 56 ends, but they had a late comeback,” he said.

“We had the last bowl of the day through Lee Wesley and he needed to pick up an extra shot to force extra ends, but it never eventuated.”

Sebastian Pretty’s rink was the big winner for Club Sunbury, winning 30-30, while Marc Bullows rink won 17-15.

Mark Cowan’s rink had a bad day, losing 30-15 and Wesley’s rink lost 24-16.

Glennon said Pretty and Akasha Fortune were the standouts for Club Sunbury on the day. He said it was good signs for the club going forward, with both among the young stars at the club.

Glennon said the group was disappointed with the result.

“We had a home final and a lot of success all season,” he said. “We’d been hard to beat at home and to fall at the first hurdle by the narrowest margin, is a devastating result.”

The finals exit means that Club Sunbury won’t be part of a new competition, which will fit in between premier division and division 1.

It was what the club was aiming for pre-season.

“There is going to be another premier division and we were hoping to be in that to attract some more players,” Glennon said. “It will be a good division to play in.

“We’ll still have a recruitment drive and hopefully we’ll pick up a few more bowlers.”

Overall, Glennon said the club was heading in the right direction.

“We had three sides from the club get promoted and our first side played finals,” he said. “Overall looking at the bigger picture, it’s a fantastic achievement.”

Club Sunbury’s second side was in action on Sunday against Boronia as it played for the overall division 3 championship, which was after deadline.

Club won its semi final against Dandenong Club 3, 95 (18)-56 (0).

Clive Moffat’s rink was the big winner in the semi final, winning 34-11.
