Hume council will investigate expanding its Environmental Champs program to include opportunities for young people.

During the past eight years the pilot program has run, more than 120 people have gone through the 10 week training program and it has been the catalyst for more than 60 community-run projects in Hume over that time.

At the most recent council meeting, Cr Jodi Jackson raised the idea of expanding the program to include younger people.

She said it would be a good opportunity to support “tomorrow’s environmental leaders”.

“Hume’s environmental champions has been a highly successful program that has been offered to those who live, work and study in Hume,” she said.

“The original program has matured significantly that we are in a really good place to be able to put together a similar program tailored to a younger audience.

“We know young people have great ideas and it would be wonderful to see the types of ideas that kids of Hume can come up with, that we as councillors and the community can get behind.”

Councillors Drew Jessop and Geoff Porter both agreed that it was a good idea and a way to engage the young people of the future and help them gain more knowledge.
