The Gisborne Olde Time Market returned with a force yesterday as eager visitors flocked to the event for the first time in two years.

With such a lengthy hiatus since it last run, market manager Phyllis Boyd said the organising committee, known as Gisborne Region Events Activities & Tourism, weren’t certain how much interest there would be in the community.

But after setting up with 160 local stallholders, she was blown away by the amount of interest, as parked cars lined the streets.

“It was an excellent market, many stall holders sold out by the end of the morning,” Ms Boyd said.

“We chose to have it smaller, approximately half the size that we normally have in the winter months, we’ll have to expand beyond that size gradually.”

Prior to the pandemic the market had been running for 50 years.

Ms Boyd said they now intend to return the market to its regular schedule of the first Sunday of every month.

The next market will be held on Sunday, March 6.
