Soccer with the stars

Sunbury’s junior soccer players will get to run with some of the best when Scottish premiership giants Celtic Football Club pay them a visit next month.

The Hoops, as they are affectionately known, will hold football clinics at Sunbury United Football Club over two days on April 4 and 5.

The local club’s mini roos, aged four to seven years, and junior teams, eight to 16 years, will get the chance to hone their skills in ball mastery, attacking and defending and small-sides matches alongside the Celtics players and coaches.

Sunbury United spokesman Daniel Moore says the visit means a lot to the youngsters who will get to rub shoulders with some of the game’s greats.

“It will give them the opportunity to be coached by coaches from an elite European club and to learn the basics and the technical side of the game,” Mr Moore says.

“We recently hosted the United Kingdom 12s competition here last year and we hope that these clinics will be as successful as that event in bringing young players to the game.”

There will also be a chance for one player to attend the Celtic FC Player Academy in Glasgow for a week. The trip is valued up to $3500.

Registrations close on April 1.
