Cancer Council Victoria is encouraging Macedon Ranges residents to help the fight against cancer one cuppa at a time.

Registrations are now open for Macedon Ranges locals to host a morning tea as part of the Cancer Council Victoria’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to support families affected by cancer.

The official day to host a morning tea is Thursday, May 27, however people can register to host a tea anytime in May or June.

More than 309 Macedon Ranges residents are diagnosed with cancer each year, with 36,000 people diagnosed with the disease statewide, according to Cancer Council Victoria.

In 2019, 48 registered morning teas were held in the Macedon Ranges. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 16 morning teas were held across the shire.

Cancer Council Victoria’s head of fundraising Lyrian Fleming-Parsley said national fundraising income for the morning tea had dropped by more than $9.6 million in 2020.

“This will have a direct impact on the funding available for our vital cancer research, prevention programs and support services, such as the 13 11 20 information and support line, wig service and peer support programs,” she said.
