This February Macedon Ranges council celebrated the third year anniversary of its four bin system, which diverted 43,000 tonnes of waste from landfill.
The four bin system, which was implemented in February 2020, enables recycling, food and garden organics (FOGO), general waste, and glass to be disposed of in separate bins.
Macedon Ranges mayor Annette Death said the council has achieved a 74 per cent diversion rate of waste, which is one of the highest in Victoria.
“I’m proud of what our community is achieving in this priority area and its positive impact on the environment.”
Through this system almost 29,000 tonnes of FOGO, 5500 tonnes of glass and 8500 tonnes of recycling was diverted from landfill, council reported.
This is an emissions reduction of about 126,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is enough to generate power for homes in the Macedon Ranges for a year.
Cr Death said she encourages everyone to keep up the great work in reducing their emissions.
“It shows how passionate our residents are about reducing their carbon footprint and that every little bit counts when managing waste,” she said.
Council’s assets and operations director Shane Walden said council also updated it’s ‘Let’s get sorted’ guide and will deliver a ‘how-to’ information pack to households with a kerbside service.
Residents can also get involved in the; hanging rock reserve single-use plastics art competition, the reusable nappy workshops and Romsey soft plastics kerbside recycling trial.
