Geoff Cumming’s ‘Ultimate Dream House’ will be one of four Woodend homes on display later this month as part of Sustainable House Day.

The one-day event invites people to visit some of Australia’s leading green homes.

Mr Cumming and his wife moved from Rosanna to Woodend more than two years ago.

“I have wanted to build a sustainable house all my life and now being in retirement, we’re lucky enough to be able to,” he said.

“We wanted to have two-storeys. We wanted an upstairs bed and study with an en suite. We also wanted to be in a house where we weren’t dependant on getting ourselves up the stairs.

“We’ve got sliding doors at the bottom of the stairs so that we can close off the stairs. We can move downstairs and have some young fit person upstairs as our carer. Hopefully this will lengthen the practical time we can live in it.”

The house has a range of sustainable and eco-friendly features. “It’s designed to make the best use of the sun,” he said. “We have double glazing windows, reverse recycle air-conditioning for both our heating and cooling, our hot water is with a water pump.”

This will be the second year Mr Cumming’s house has been open for Sustainable House Day. The event is on September 15.
