Grants offer a sporting chance

Sporting clubs in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are set to receive a boost for female sport.

Four clubs will share in more than $485,000 as part of VicHealth’s latest round of Active Club Grants.

The grants provide between $3000 and $10,000 to increase female participation opportunities in community sport.

The Kyneton District Soccer Club, Sunbury BMX Club, Sunbury Lawn Tennis Club and Sunbury United Football Club are among the clubs listed to receive funding.

Kyneton District Soccer Club will receive $2950 to introduce new female soccer teams for children and teenagers.

Northern Victoria Region MP Wendy Lovell said the grants would help more residents get involved in sport.

“Being part of a local sports club is a fantastic way for locals in the electorate to feel connected to their community and embrace a healthy lifestyle,” Ms Lovell said.

“With these active club grants, local sport clubs will be able to deliver a wider range of opportunities for everyone to get active no matter their age, gender or ability.

“I welcome this new funding to support our hard working grassroots sporting clubs that are making it easier for people to be active.”

VicHealth chief executive Jerril Rechter said the grants would help more residents to make exercise part of their day-to-day life.

“We continue to see a growth in the number of women and girls playing sport, so it’s fantastic to see local clubs responding to this demand,” Ms Rechter said.

The grants will also provide more social, flexible and accessible sport programs, as well as more opportunities for people from disadvantaged communities to take part.
