The Salvation Army is appealing for Sunbury’s support this Red Shield Appeal, to help raise $37 million for those in need.

The appeal is the Salvos’ 59th annual fundraising drive which runs throughout the months of April, May and June to raise money for the community programs and social services it runs.

Sunbury Salvos Corps officer lieutenant Shaun Featherston encouraged residents to get involved and said all money collected stays local.

“The Red Shield Appeal raises money to help the vulnerable people in our community,” Lieutenant Featherston said.

“Depending on the circumstances this can be used for many different situations that life presents itself for the individual or family.”

Lieutenant Featherston said residents do not have to donate money to help, they can volunteer their time at their local Salvos.

“People can give generously to our collectors or our digital door knock page … or they can … offer their time,” he said.

“People can come volunteer with us during Red Shield or even after for any of the programs and activities we do in the local community every day of the week.”

Lieutenant Featherston said Sunbury Salvos will be collecting donations throughout May and June, including an upcoming Bunnings barbeque fundraiser on June 3.

With the Salvos providing assistance to one person every 17 seconds, Lieutenant Featherston said Sunbury Salvos are there to offer support to those in need.

“People can present themselves to our doorways service Monday, Wednesday and Fridays in Anderson Road in Sunbury, [and] they can call 8873 5288 for voucher assistance.”
