Wanted: Enthusiastic school crossing supervisors.
Macedon Ranges council is putting out the call in response to a shortage of supervisors across the shire.
Cheryl Wilkinson, who has supervised children at New Gisborne Primary School for the past 35 years, is encouraging others to join her.
“Some of the kids I used to help cross the road years ago are now coming through with their own children,” Ms Wilkinson said. “I was a single mum and had two small boys at the school. Being a crossing supervisor was a perfect fit because it meant I was home for my boys in the afternoons.”
She prides herself on remembering student names.
“It makes them feel special and they remember my name, too,” she said.
The council manages 20 school crossings across the shire and employs 36 supervisors.
Community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said school crossing supervisors played a valuable role in the community.
“We appreciate their hard work and commitment to ensuring our children are safe,” she said. “Several of our crossing supervisors have more than 20 years’ service with us.”
