A new fundraising campaign in the Macedon Ranges has been launched to construct a respite centre for people diagnosed with dementia.

The Woodend Lifestyle Carers’ Group (WLCG) acquired MacGregor’s Farm on Old Lancefield Road with the plan to develop a fully-supervised farm for people living at home with early stage dementia.

WLCG committee president Neil Pomroy said the organisation wants to support carers with a unique initiative.

“Dementia is indiscriminate – it can affect anyone and, by default, their nearest and dearest

who often transition into full-time care roles,” Mr Pomroy said.

“All of our committee members have been carers at some point in time, and we are therefore

committed to ensuring other carers in our community never feel isolated and alone.

“We understand the trials and tribulations of those dedicated caring roles, and want to help

support carers as best we can through this marvellous initiative.”

According to a 2017 National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling report, there are more than 120,000 Victorians currently living with dementia.

The report also estimated that the Macedon Ranges could see a six-fold increase in residents living with dementia in the region.
