Sunbury Basketball Association is preparing to launch two free community basketball programs next month that are focused on increasing participation in the sport.
Launching on Friday, February 4, a program titled B-ALL-IN will offer non-competitive and social basketball matches tailored towards women and gender-diverse people who might be new to sport.
Each session of the eight-week program will involve warm-up and stretching exercises, basketball skill drills, and post-session social interaction, with tea, coffee, and refreshments.
On Wednesday, February 12, the association will also introduce walking basketball, which is a low-impact and social form of the sport targeted towards physically inactive or slightly active people, including those recovering from injuries.
Association business manager Jamie Dowsett said that the programs will “elevate sport in Sunbury.”
“It’ll make basketball more accessible and enjoyable, especially since these programs are free,” Ms Dowsett said.
“I think in our community … these types of programs haven’t been offered historically … I think opening those doors, especially for the target audiences, is going to be especially beneficial,” she said.
“Our community at [Sunbury Basketball Association], it is like a family … both these programs are aimed to be fun, non-competitive, and social, so I think this is just going to foster that community spirit that we have.”
B-ALL-IN sessions will run every Tuesday from 4–5pm on Courts 5 and 6 and walking basketball sessions will run every Wednesday at 10.30am on Court 1 at Boardman Stadium, Sunbury.
