A Sunbury sparky has earned himself a flash new title as a Kangan Institute Apprentice of the Year.

Electrician Steve McKinnon, above, claimed top honours in his category in the awards at South Wharf earlier this month.

The awards recognised more than 30 apprentices and trainees from construction, engineering, electrical, landscape construction, commercial cookery, bakery, hairdressing and automotive backgrounds.

Mr McKinnon, who is at the end of a four-year apprenticeship with Quick Smart Contracting, said he was happy to have been nominated by one of his trade school teachers – but to win was even better.

“My trades school teacher nominated me because my results at school were really good,” he said.“Winning the award should be great for the resume and will help towards the future.”

He credited his parents with helping him choose his career path.

“When I was in school mum and dad always tee’d up work experience every school holidays with different trades people because they knew that I wanted to be a tradie.

“I found that I liked working as an electrician the best and that’s what I went on to study.

Mr McKinnon said he hoped to work for himself in the future.

He said the $500 prize money and certificate was a welcome reward.
