Fighting back against elder fraud with free film screening

Financial elder abuse is being highlighted for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Australia’s National Council on Aging recently reported $3.4 billion being lost worldwide to people aged over 60 in 2023 due to financial elder abuse by scammers.

Victims are often left with no way to recoup their losses.

On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Sunday, June 15, there will be a special screening of the action comedy Thelma in Kyneton in a joint initiative between Macedon RangescCouncil and the Kindness to Elders Institute.

The movie, made by a grandson about his grandmother, Thelma gets scammed out of $10,000 and decides to take matters into her own hands to get back what was taken from her in a fun look at a serious issue.

The screening will be hosted by Australia’s own veteran actor, Ian Rooney, who will host a special session with local finance identity Bob Nixon on how you can safeguard your finances against this rise in fraud.

The film will start at 2pm at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, with attendees invited to take part in ‘Stir a Cuppa’ prior to the film’s start. It is also free to attend.

The cuppa will be held in a separate room at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, and encourages all to sit down, share a cuppa and check in with an elder, with information and support resources also available.
