The Sunbury arts community’s revitalised forever home is a step closer, with the state government announcing it will provide a long-term peppercorn lease of land at Jacksons Hill to Hume council.
In a statement on Friday afternoon, Sunbury MP Josh Bull said the lease will include the use of some of the significant red brick heritage buildings.
“We promised to deliver a community arts precinct at Jacksons Hill, and that is exactly what we’re doing,” Mr Bull said.
“We’ve already invested $3 million towards delivering this facility, and this new lease will ensure works can get underway soon.”
“This announcement builds on the $3 million investment from the Labor government towards Hume council to support the delivery the Community Arts and Creative Industries Precinct,” a government statement said.
“The lease agreement will help deliver Jacksons Hill’s great potential as a central hub for Sunbury’s arts community. This will help fulfill the communities aspirations for the site and maximise public access while preserving its rich history.”
The government said the Jacksons Hill master plan, released by the Victorian Building Authority, showcases plans to develop the site into a range of distinct precincts, “and specifically the Sunbury Community Arts Precinct which has been endorsed by Hume council”.
“The Jacksons Hill site is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and contains many buildings that are of high architectural, historical and social significance,” the government said.
“The remainder of the masterplan will be delivered once a plan of subdivision for the site occurs, this is expected once the Cultural Heritage Management Plan is completed.”
