Stephen Grant immigrated to Australia from Germany more than 20 years ago. The Woodend resident will receive his Australian citizenship at Macedon Ranges council’s Australia Day awards ceremony. He spoke to Jessica Micallef.
What is your connection to the Sunbury and/or Macedon Ranges area?
I’ve always loved coming to this area since moving to Australia, and four years ago my wife and I moved to Woodend.
How long have you lived in Australia?
I’ve been in Australia for 23 years, the first 19 of them in Melbourne. I’m originally from Canada, though I lived in Germany for the 10 years preceding my arrival in Australia.
Why did you decide to move to the country?
I met my wife Francesca in 1995 and decided to immigrate shortly thereafter. It was the best choice I could have made.
Do you work or study here – tell me about it?
I’ve been working at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne since 1999. I started as a casual teacher and have been the head of voice for the last 10 years. I also undertook postgraduate studies at the University of Melbourne and in 2019 I completed my PhD.
What do you love most about the area you live in?
The wonderful air, birdsong and the many beautiful walks in the area.
Do you have a favourite spot in your local area to grab a bite to eat?
I would have to say my favourite local restaurant is Midnight Starling in Kyneton.
