Sunbury foodstore Mowatt’s nationally recognised

A family business in Sunbury has been recognised nationally for its pies.

Foodstore, Mowatt’s, took out a number of medals in the 2017 Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.

Competing against bakers from across the country, the small business received a silver award for its chicken balti pie and a bronze award for each of its scotch pie, chunky steak pie and sausage roll.

Scotsman Stevie Mowatt, who owns the store with his Welsh wife Donna, said they were thrilled to receive the titles, particularly because neither of the pair were bakers.

“I’m a butcher by trade, so we take care to trim the meat and not leave any fat on it,” he said.

This year was the first time the Mowatt’s entered the competition, after local customers urged them to take part.

The couple moved to Sunbury 14 years ago and have been running their shop for the past two years, as well as raising their four children.

Located on Macedon Street, Mowatt’s sells Scottish cuisine, such as haggis, black pudding and sausages, as well as British and Aussie foods.
