Gisborne’s unbeaten start continues

Gisborne’s unbeaten start in Central Highlands Bowls Division continued after they doubled Trentham’s score on Saturday.

In one of the most comprehensive performances of the division 1 season so far, Gisborne won all four rinks by at least eight shots, on the way to a 135 (18)-66 (0) win.

Glenn Johnston Jnr’s rink had the biggest win of the day, by 32 shots, 38-6. Johnston Jnr is the leading skip in division 1 after six rounds, having won all five of his completed matches.

Johnston Jnr said the start to the season would hopefully set up the rest of the season. Gisborne was runners-up last season to Kyneton Golf.

“It has been an absolutely fantastic start,” he said. “We knew we had to find an extra little bit and we got some new players in. Last season is some motivation to go further.

“We knew we had to improve this season.”

Johnston Jnr said they had looked within to strengthen the side, bringing younger players through into the top side.

Since getting a new green last season, the club has been unbeatable at home.

“We’ve looked at what Kyneton Golf have done over the years, and they’ve been really successful.

“They bring new energy and they’re motivated to perform well and start up in the top side.”

Gisborne sits atop the ladder one point clear of Lancefield and well clear of the rest of the pack. Both sides have won five matches each, the sixth was against each other and was declared a draw after being interrupted by rain.

“We’d like to play a full match against them,” Johnston Jnr said.

“It was called off three-quarters of the way through last time. We were up by five shots and leading three of the rinks at the time. We would like to finish top-two,” he said.

“Kyneton Golf won three finals last season to win the premiership. Hopefully, nine and half wins should get us a top-two finish.”

In other results, Lancefield also came through undefeated, with a 99 (16)-86 (2) win against last season’s premiers Kyneton Golf.

Bacchus Marsh had a convincing 116 (18)-60 (0) win against Woodend, while Romsey defeated Kyneton in a thriller, 97 (16)-96 (2).

Kyneton Gold, Macedon, Mt Cottrell and Bacchus Marsh had wins in division 2, while Romsey, Woodend, Gisborne, Mt Cottrell and Trentham were winners in division 3.
