Five wicking garden beds will bring a splash of color and, eventually, a harvest of healthy vegetables to O’Shanassy Street, Sunbury.
Residents are being invited to help plant seeds and seedlings in the beds, which are about to be installed by Hume council.
A planting session will be held from 11.15am-1pm on May 28. Spinach, broccoli, cauliflower and kale will be grown in the plots, which will be looked after by people through the council’s Adopt a Veg Bed program.
Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou expects the beds will be a talking point while teaching children about how food is grown.
“The plots will be an attraction bringing the community together,” she says.
The beds are designed so that water is stored at their base for vegetable roots to absorb as required.
