Sunbury Jets set a plan to score early to unsettle Warrandyte in Big V men’s division 1 on Saturday night.

The Venom are one of the best defensive sides in the competition, known for keeping opponents to low scores.

But the Jets scored a massive 32 points in the first quarter to open up a 13-point lead at quarter-time.

They kept up the intensity for most of the game, winning 90-60.

Jets’ coach Andrew Summerville said the plan was simply to set up the win.

“We had a plan to try and score quickly and be really offensive, but it had to be on the back of our defence.

“I think, particularly in the first and second quarters, our defence was good; we created stops, which created some fast scores in transition.

“To put 30-something on them in a quarter and 90 in the game is possibly one of the highest scores against them all year.”

While impressed with the first half, Summerville said he would again look at what they do at half-time after a slow third quarter.

“We spoke about it at half-time, about not going away from what we were doing,” he said.

“They got some easy shots too, which I’m a little disappointed about, particularly in the third quarter.

“We didn’t score much for that quarter, but still won by 30 points, so we can’t be too disappointed.”

Five Jets players hit double figures for the first time this season.

Both Sanders and Mitch Newton (17 points) have been participating in open scrimmages with National Basketball League side Melbourne United.

“They get to play against some better players,” Summerville said.

“Joe Ingles was there one day and Chris Goulding is there, so it’s good exposure for those guys.”

The win puts the Jets back into the top eight, but Summerville said they weren’t looking any further ahead than this weekend.

“We have to play Casey here, and then travel to Latrobe, and both sides are in the top five. We have to be successful against them, and what happens after that isn’t a focal point.”

“I don’t want them to get too far ahead of themselves.”
