Serving up some fun

Deer Park Tennis Club is hitting its way towards another big summer this weekend.

The club has partnered with Brimbank council and local schools as part of the Kids Day Out program, designed to get more children around the area active and playing tennis.

Liisa Barrow is one of the coaches at Deer Park Tennis Club, and said the day was a great chance to give the sport a try, or dust off the racquet ahead of the coming summer.

“It’s all about getting kids involved and active,” Ms Barrow said.

“We’ll have a couple of hours of activities, introducing kids to the game and having a bit of fun.

“We’re coming up to term four, which is one of our busiest times of the year, so this is a good chance to get in and give it a try.”

The club took part in the In2Tennis promotion at the start of the year, which resulted in a huge boost in junior numbers at the club. Ms Barrow hopes this weekend will provide a similar outcome.

“I think there was 20 juniors at the club at the start of the year, it’s now about 100,” she said.

“That In2Tennis program had, I think, 60 kids come through and give it a try and about 50 signed up.

“I think some people think it’s just a summer sport so it’s important for people to realise that we do play year-round and to get involved.”

The Kids Day Out is for children aged up to 12 and their families. It will be held on August 26, noon-3pm at Deer Park Tennis Club, 119 Station Road, Deer Park.
