Bridge fix

The state government will install a new laser detection system as part of a $1.2 million project to stop trucks hitting Footscray’s Napier Street Bridge. Electronic message signs will direct over-height trucks to use an alternate route and cameras will capture drivers who disobey warnings.

Waste not, want not

Hobsons Bay residents can recycle electronic waste for free at the council’s centre in Sugar Gum Drive, Altona, on November 18 from 8am-3pm. No booking required. For details on suitable items and loads, call 9932 1000 or visit hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/ewaste

Recycling award

Western Health has won the Health category in the Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards for a program that recycles about 500 kilograms of steel from single-use metal objects.

Canned heat

Clear your library fine with a can of food. Hobsons Bay libraries are running the Food for Fines program from November 13 to December 10, where non-perishable food can be given for an overdue charge. One food item will be equivalent to $10 and will be distributed to emergency relief and family support charities.
