Learning leap looms for Wyndham

Talented weavers from the communities of Burma will showcase their skills as part of the Wyndham Learning Festival.

The festival, to be presented by the Wyndham Community and Education Centre in Werribee with support from Wyndham council, will run from September 1 to 8.

Across the seven days, education and training providers, schools, businesses, government and community organisations will run more than 135 events promoting learning for all.

On the last day of the festival, the WCEC will host an open day and loom tour at Jellicoe Street House, which is located at the centre’s rear. From 10am to 1.30pm, Wyndham residents of all ages will be able to watch as people from the communities of Burma create fabric on a series of looms.

Refreshments will be provided in the community garden, as male and female weavers provide an insight into their cultural heritage.

The festival will include presentations on topics as diverse as keeping backyard chooks, beekeeping, paella and Maltese sweet making.

WCEC chief executive Jennie Barrera said the learning festival brought people together, with a focus on lifelong learning across the municipality.

“Our vision is to create a socially inclusive community that enjoys high levels of learning and employment,” she said.

The sponsors for this year’s festival include Avalon Airport, Victoria Polytechnic, west@work, AMES Australia, Deakin University, the WynBay LLEN and the Huddle.

No bookings are required for the open day and loom tour. Details: wynlearnfestival.org.au
