Cheaper, greener living

Interest free loans on renewable energy systems are helping to get Macedon Ranges residents living greener.

The new funding initiative, by the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group, will be one of the main talking points of the group’s upcoming annual meeting in Woodend on October 11.

Group president Ralf Thesing encourages residents to attend and learn how they can help to transform the Macedon Ranges into a model sustainable community. Mr Thesing says he hopes the initiative will assist people in building more sustainable homes.

“We have created the Macedon Ranges Renewable Energy Fund,” Mr Thesing says.

“It gives community groups zero interest loans to install renewable energy systems on their buildings. It’s a revolving fund, where repayments are made from savings on the recipient’s electricity bills, and that money is then loaned to another group.”

On the night, professor Kate Auty will present a talk titled “Many People Make Change” reflecting on climate change, biodiversity, community energy and communications. Professor Auty is the Australian Capital Territory sustainability commissioner having served in the same position in Victoria.

She is also the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute advisory board chair.

Professor Auty will speak from 6.30pm to 8pm at the Woodend Neighbourhood House with the sustainability group annual general meeting to follow.
