Bacchus Marsh library demolition starts

DEMOLITION crews have today begun tearing down the building to the old Bacchus Marsh library.

In what came as a shock to some residents, demolition works began on the 44-year-old building just after midday.

The future of the library has been a hot topic in recent months, with many community groups calling for the building to be saved.

Moorabool Council has not indicated what it will do with the land once the building is removed.

Resident and Moorabool Shire Council candidate Tonia Dudzik questioned why the public was not informed exactly when the building was going to be destroyed.

‘‘I would have chained myself to the building if I had of known,’’ she said.

A council spokesman said he was unsure if it had a protocol in place for informing the public when buildings were to be demolished.

Mayor Pat Griffin told the Weekly a decision on the future of the site would be made by the incoming council when elections are held later in the year.

‘‘Council won’t be announcing anything until after the elections,’’ Cr Griffin said.

‘‘We don’t want to see the library to become a political football.’’
