What do science and the number 70 have in common?
They’re both part of this year’s Victorian Education Week, which is being celebrated with a science theme in its 70th year.
From May 18 to 24, hundreds of schools will join in the week-long event through open days, exhibitions and themed class activities.
Free events will give thousands of students a chance to experience tourism, education and cultural activities hosted by museums, galleries, libraries, zoos, farms, universities and performance groups throughout Victoria.
The events will include:
■ The Victorian Space Science Engineering Centre’s school outreach program “Rock ID Parade” for year 7-8 students to learn about rocks and minerals.
■ Ecolinc’s “Exploring the Biodiversity of Western Volcanic Plains” in Bacchus Marsh for year 4-9 students who will use an app to identify plant and animal species.
■ BioLab: Victorian BioScience Education Centre’s “The Stem of Surfing” event in Belmont for year 10 students, allowing them to explore the world of surfing and wetsuit technology.
■ Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne will host an exhibition with photographs by years 7-9 students.
■ The National Wool Museum in Geelong will host a program, “Sticky Stinky Geelong”, allowing students to explore the history and science of sheep by-products.
