Going wild for Lorraine

“Cancer has touched me in so many ways – it’s all around me,” Lorraine Spencer says.

Mrs Spencer’s mother had breast cancer and another friend is fighting bladder cancer.

Last year, the Sunbury resident took part in Relay for Life, a fund-raiser for Cancer Council Victoria. Her team raised $4200. This year, Khe Sanh team members want to double the amount and are pulling out all stops.

Mrs Spencer’s son-in-law Shaun Evans (pictured) is hosting a dance in Woodend this Saturday to raise money for the team. For almost 10 years, Mr Evan’s stepfather has been fighting prostate and bladder cancers.

“Everyone has someone in their family who has been touched by cancer,” Mr Evans said. “We’ll be doing more fund-raisers throughout the year – this is kicking it off, it’s the first one for them.”

The Relay for Life Sunbury event will be held in October. But people can kick up their heels on Saturday to the sounds from The Wild Bunch, a six-piece New Orleans-style party band who will present a mix of swing and rhythm and blues. Mr Evans will be play the saxophone.

The dance will be held upstairs at the Victoria Hotel. Doors open at 7pm with music and dancing from 7.30pm.

Tickets cost $15 online until Friday at northotown.com.au or at the door for $20. Details: 0449 922 425
