Despite its best performance of the season, Sunbury United lost to Sydenham Park in the FFV men’s State League 1 north-west on Saturday.

According to its coach, United’s “school boy errors” ended up being the difference between the teams. with Sydenham Park winning 4-3.

United coach Greg Czapnik said he thought the better team on the day had lost.

“It was a good game and the best we’ve played this year,” he said.

“We were punished with very poor loss of concentration at key points of the game.

“We had 65 per cent of the ball and had the best opportunities in the first half; we should have been up 3-0 but instead trailed 0-1.

United’s errors continued in the second half.

“At one point, [when] they we weren’t in
any danger of scoring, the goalkeeper went to kick the ball away and missed the ball completely and they [Sydenham] scored,” Czapnik said.

“It seemed to be the pattern of the day.”

Czapnik said despite the loss the team could take positives from the game.

“We have played well against Altona East and Cairnlea but haven’t got the results there either. It’s pleasing to see the majority of players in form all on the one day. It was a good overall performance, just let down by that loss of concentration.”

Captain Robin Mois in the midfield was best for United.

This week United faces Preston away.

“It’s a massive game with the competition so tight. We need to win if we’re to play finals,” Czapnik said.

In state league 5 west, Kyneton defeated Keilor Wolves 6-2. Mark Bitmead scored three of the goals while Benjamin Plant, Jake Sartori and Ryan Bailey all chipped in with a goal each. The win moves Kyneton to fourth.
