Call for warm spirit of giving as weather cools

The Red Cross Store in Sunbury is getting ready to rug up this winter and appealing for donations of warm clothes.

Retail area manager Chris Drossos said the store fell short of winter donations after summer had sizzled.

“Around this time we get a lot of demand from our customers looking for winter clothing, but the shops are really low on donations,” he said. “The more winter donations we have in the store the more we can fund-raise for the Red Cross and the programs we support.”

Among the list of wanted donations were jackets, coats, jumpers, scarves and gloves.

“We are always looking for quality garments,” Mr Drossos said.

And he encouraged people to remember the golden rule when donating: “If you wouldn’t wear it then you shouldn’t donate it”.

Mr Drossos said the store played a vital role in the community and provided an opportunity not only for residents to buy cheap, quality clothing but also for others to donate their unwanted clothes without adding to landfill.

“It’s a place you can go to and find absolute treasures at really great prices,” he said.

Mr Drossos said the Red Cross retail stores were the best way to generate revenue for the organisation and praised the volunteers who looked after the store six days a week.

They help support the everyday work of Red Cross, including disaster relief and recovery, daily phone calls to check on elderly people living alone and providing nutritious breakfasts for schoolchildren who need a healthy start to the day.

Anyone wanting to donate can visit the store at 80 O’Shanassy Street.
