Romsey: Fire shed to boost response

By Angela Valente

Work to build a new fire station in Romsey is under way, but the volunteer-run brigade is urging residents to chip in some cash to help make it a bigger building.

The CFA has provided funding for a three-bay station, but the fire brigade has four vehicles to house.

To add an extra bay, and be able to park all four vehicles under the same roof, the brigade must find an extra $60,000.

Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells turned the sod at the site of the new station on Sunday.

CFA captain Trevor Wilson said the brigade had outgrown the current station, which opened in 1986.

He said the new building, at 22-24 Stawell Street, meant the CFA would be better equipped to respond to emergencies in a growing region.

“We have some issues with traffic management, and as our appliances are bigger now than they were in 1986, they are parked nose-to-tail in the shed, which does have an impact on our capacity to respond.”

The new station will have improved office space and amenities for volunteers.

Mr Wilson called on residents to keep supporting the brigade.

“All donations will be warmly received and incorporated into our projects which benefit the broader community.”

Donations can be sent to Romsey Post Office, 1/107 Main Street, Romsey.
