Gisborne’s unbeaten start to the season continued against South Gisborne in the Bendigo Football League on Saturday.

The young Bulldogs side was in control from the start of the game and played its first four-quarter performance of the year to win
13.18 (96) to 4.5 (29).

Bulldogs coach Rod Sharp said it was his side’s best game for the season.

“It was a more even effort and the first time we’ve controlled play for the whole game,” he said.

“We wanted to have one-on-one contests all over the ground, which we got. We had a bit of rain after half-time, but the weather wasn’t too bad. We should have won by 15 goals.”

Sharp said it was pleasing his team was winning games even though it hadn’t been playing four-quarter football.

“We have a young side with an average age of 20 and a half, and we had five under-18 players on Saturday. We’re going to get inconsistency with a young side, but it’s encouraging for us that we play well enough to win games, even when we play well for only parts of them.

This week the Bulldogs face Eaglehawk away, Sharp describing it as the “hardest road trip in the league”.

Kyneton had its second straight win for the season, defeating Golden Square 9.8 (62) to 7.13 (55).

The Tigers took an early lead. Despite not scoring a goal in the second term, they still led at half time. In the third, they kicked four goals to none and opened up a 27-point lead, managing to hold on till the end.

Joel Stevenson was the best for the Tigers, with Ben Weightman kicking three goals.

The Tigers now sit seventh on the ladder and this week face Strathfieldsaye.
