Drinking teens suspected in Sunbury park burn

Police are seeking a group of teenagers who may be linked to a deliberately lit fire in Sunbury in March.

It is believed the fire was lit about 3.20pm on Friday, March 25, at the Sunbury Recreation Reserve on Cornish Street.

The fire started about 50 metres from the skate park, which was being used by children and families. Detective Senior Constable Tim Norton said the group appeared to have no regard for the safety and well-being of the public.

“It’s quite a dangerous thing to do,” he said. “It’s an area where there are children and families and a large number of people were using the facilities. It’s definitely putting people at risk.” Detective Senior Constable Norton is calling for witnesses to the event to help with the investigation.

It’s believed a group of about eight to 10 youths were drinking in the area at the time of the offence. The fire burned up to 50 square metres
of grassland and trees along a walking
track. Witnesses or anyone with information can call Detective Senior Constable Norton on
9371 6155.
