Whittlesea United sits in the perfect position to earn promotion and take out the FFV state league 3 north-west title.
With three rounds remaining, United is atop the ladder and five points clear of FC Strathmore and Brimbank Stallions.
United coach Peter Schwellinger knows his side is in good shape to stay clear of the chasing teams.
On Monday they defeated Fawkner 3-0 to maintain their lead at the top of the table.
“The teams which are second, third, fourth and fifth play each other,” he said before Monday night’s game. “Whatever happens, they’re taking points off each other.
“If we get win against Fawkner, it will go a long way to sealing promotion. We play the bottom side in the final round.”
Schwellinger said that heading into the season, earning promotion was the goal and winning the title a bonus.
Now the side has a good shot at both.
Schwellinger said winning a title would be a great way to celebrate the club’s 30th anniversary.
The coach said the biggest thing this season for the side had been the consistency shown week in and week out.
“Every team is going to lose matches at times – you can’t go through the season undefeated,” he said.
“But we’ve been solid and consistent, and everyone is playing their roles. We have been blessed with a big squad, 16 to 18, who can play in the first team.
“The boys understand that it’s a squad effort and everyone has stuck around.”
In other results, Epping City and Upfield played out a 0-0 draw and La Trobe University lost to Brimbank Stallions 2-0.
In state league 2 north-west, Hume United remains just a game behind the top two sides after a 3-1 win against Diamond Valley.
Sporting Whittlesea had tough day in 5-0 loss to Hoppers Crossing.
In state league 5 north, Mill Park’s match with Watsonia Heights was washed out, Lalor United defeated West Preston 2-0 and while Greenvale United lost 2-1 to Marcellin Old Collegians.
After wrapping up promotion last week, Craigieburn City sealed the state league 5 north title with a 1-0 win against Campbellfield Lions.
Second-placed Plenty Valley Lions remain second on the ladder after a 4-1 against Meadow Park and third-placed Bundoora United smashed Thornbury Athletic 10-0.
