Tigers still to find their bite

First step was getting a Kyneton women’s football team up and running … now it’s about getting that first win.

The Tigers are yet to win a match in their first season in the west division of the Victorian Women’s Football League, but each week there’s been improvement.

Coach Lisa Borg said the side was loving the challenge of learning the game, and playing together.

Borg is the most experienced player, having played more than 150 games for Sunbury Lions. She also played for Kyneton up until under-16s level.

“We are going OK at the moment, but we are still struggling for numbers a bit,” she said. “We have a core group each week keeping us going.

“We have 18 players all up, but usually 14 playing each week. Only once have we had 18 players on the field,” she said.

Borg is loving the challenge of coaching the new side, most of whom have never played footy before.

“There has been no pressure. It is fantastic being coach … you can drill things into the players you want them to be doing.

“I like teaching and I’m enjoying playing with them. Hopefully, the team will be around for a long time.”

Borg says the scoreboard isn’t necessarily reflective of the games.

“Every team has three on the bench and we have no one, so we don’t get a chance to rotate,” Borg said. “The first and third quarters, we play really well. The second and fourth, not so great.”

She said some players had really taken to the game.

“Skye Sinclair is from a rugby background, and she is starting to get better towards the end of the season.

“Marnie Love has been an outstanding backman, while Kylie Munro has never played before … she’s another who has picked up the game really well.”

Borg said the side is hoping to get a win before the year’s out. She said it is also looking for more players, even those who just want to come and see whether they like it for a couple of weeks.

“We are improving, and we want to get a whole team on the ground every week.

“To get that and to get a win would be a good finish to the season,” Borg said.

But that elusive win wasn’t to be on Sunday. The Tigers lost to Sunbury Lions, 7-16 (58) – 0-0 (0).
