Kyneton Tigers are heading in the right direction despite being winless in the Basketball Victoria Country Basketball League men’s north-west.
The Tigers have found the going tough this season against some really experienced opposition.
Tigers’ player Brendan McCarthy said the side was making some inroads.
“It’s been a good season so far,” he said. ”We’ve stepped up since last season and we’re really trying to get a win on the board.
“We’re putting more pressure on the really good teams and we’re taking a lot from last year.
“Hopefully we’ll get one or two wins under the belt.”
McCarthy said one of the biggest improvements this season had been on the defence end.
He said they had looked to put on the same sort of pressure on the opposition as they do to them.
“We’re trying to put that pressure back on them,” he said. “We’re a developing team with some young players.
“A lot of the other sides have a lot of older players. We’re getting there as a team, we’re maturing and growing.”
McCarthy said the opportunity to play against National Basketball League 1 South players was something the group was relishing despite the results.
“It’s a pretty cool experience and something to look forward to,” he said. ”It helps us develop as players and it gives the younger kids something to look forward to.
McCarthy said the culture within the club was really strong, with not only the men’s side, but the women’s side really close.
He said with the majority of players all Kyneton locals, it has a big impact and people want to hang around after games.
The Tigers had a bye on the weekend.
Speaking before the weekend off, McCarthy said they would continue to work hard over the break.
“We definitely want to get a win, but it’s about getting better as a team,” he said.
“We want to keep improving and hope things fall into place. We’re enjoying the process as well.
“It’s not all about wins and the culture we have helps with that.”
The Tigers women’s side also had a bye.
This week both sides play the Echuca Pirates.
Meanwhile, the Macedon Ranges Rockies overcame the Bendigo Braves on Saturday night.
The Rockies set the 67-58 win up in the first half, leading by 18 points at half time.
Josh O’Connell top scored with 22 points.
The women’s side lost 77-55 to the Braves. Cara Beattie top scored with 17 points for the Rockies.
