A poor start against Glenroy has ended Sunbury’s season in the opening round of the Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1, section 1 finals.
Going in as underdogs against Glenroy, which was one of two standout teams during the season, Sunbury was slow out of the blocks and it came back to bite them.
They trailed by more than 30 shots early in the piece and were still down by 25 shots at tea time.
Despite a comeback later in the day, Sunbury still fell short, losing 84-72.
Sunbury’s David Glennon said they were never able to recover after the poor start. “We got within nine shots, but we couldn’t get any closer,” he said.
“We were chasing tail straight away. After 12 to 15 ends we were down by 30 shots and it was hard to peg them back from there.”
Mark Cowan’s rink won by 10 shots and was the only winning rink for Sunbury.
Carla Krizanic’s rink lost by eight shots, Todd Trewarne’s rink lost by 10 shots and Wayne Long’s rink went down by four shots.
Glennon said in the end, the season comes down to the two best teams in Glenroy and Moonee Valley.
The only other Sunbury side in finals, the fourth side, was also knocked out in the semi finals, losing by 12 shots.
Glennon said it had been a slightly disappointing season compared to the last couple.
“We haven’t had any team promoted. We had been hopeful of getting one of our division 3 teams promoted to close the gap between teams, but we’ve still got the gulf between the top team and lower teams,” he said.
It was better news for Sunbury’s Brad Janner who is through to the next stage of the Champion of Champions tournament. Having claimed the Sunbury championship, Janner faced the other club championships from the region. Last week he defeated Brunswick’s Ian Ewing in the final 25-17, to move on the next stage that will be held in Bendigo in April.
