Sunbury’s rain play

Club Sunbury was the big winner in the Bowls Victoria weekend pennant division 1, section 1 competition on Saturday.

As heavy rain across the metro region meant the majority of matches didn’t go ahead, but Sunbury managed to get on the green at Bacchus Marsh.

While it rained throughout the clash, the two sides stuck it out.

It proved worthwhile for Sunbury which came away with a 113 (18)-62 (0) win.

Sunbury’s David Glennon said all the players were pretty soaked at the end of the day but were really happy with the result, as no other games in that division were completed.

“It was a good win to get 19 points and get some points on all the other sides,” he said.

“Everyone else got nine points as they didn’t get on, apart from Bacchus Marsh who get nothing.

“It could prove pretty crucial towards the end of the season in terms of shots and percentage.

“It could work well.”

Marc Bullows’ rink had a massive 35-14 win, while Desmond Cann Jnr’s rink had a 34-15 win to be the big winners on the day.

Mark Armstrong returned to the side and had a 22-14 win, while Lee Wesley’s rink won 22-19.

Glennon said they had a few standouts across the day.

He said Bullows and Ricky Bell, who was the lead in Bullows’ rink, had good days in that rink, while Cann and Shepherd both had good days in Cann’s rink.

Among those out there for Sunbury was former Australian star Carla Krizanic, who was playing her game for the season.

Glennon said Krizanic wasn’t likely to play every week, but would play when she was available in a boost for the side.

Mark Cowan, who has been a long time skip at the club, is set to be available this week for the first time this season.

Glennon said it would mean some shuffling around.

“It goes to show how good the squad are and that anything can happen.

“It’s good to get some key players back.”

Sunbury sits third on the ladder on 34 points with a 2-1 record.

The good luck flowed onto the second side that managed to also get on and get the win against Craigieburn.

Sunbury was the only side to get a win in division 2, section 1 as it accounted for Craigieburn under the dome at Sunbury away from the wet and wild conditions.

Sunbury won 95 (14)-68 (4) with Clive Moffatt’s rink having a big 37-12 shot win.

It was Sunbury’s first win of the season and brings it back to the pack.

The rest of Sunbury’s sides were washed out.

The top side will be at home this Saturday against Moonee Valley.

Glennon said they were hoping to make the most of home ground advantage and get another win on the board.
