Sunbury has come away with the win in a close encounter with Melton in their Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1 clash.
Looking to keep the pressure on the top two teams, third-placed Sunbury had a fight on its hands until the final ends.
Shane Trewarne, deputising for his son, Todd, who missed the match, led his rink to a 22-8 win, while Marc Bullows’ rink lost 23-16.
Sunbury’s David Glennon said the other two rinks could have gone either way.
Carla Krizanic won on the final end against fellow Victorian representative Samantha Shanahan. Mark Cowan was up all day before losing two shots on the final end to lose by a shot.
Sunbury got the win 75 (14)-67 (4).
Glennon said Trewarne and Wayne Long, who was in the same rink as Trewarne, were the two standouts.
Sunbury remains third, 28 points behind Moonee Valley and 10 points behind second-placed Glenroy. Sunbury has opened a 37-point gap on fourth-placed Essendon (2).
Glennon said his team was in a good position heading into the last part of the season.
“We’re due to face Moonee Valley this week,” he said. “If we can carry on and beat them it would be nice, and would close the gap on them to under a match.
“It’s expected to be 39 degrees on Saturday, so I’m not sure if we’ll play if it stays that way.
“We’ve got plenty of games still to play and a lot of winnable games in that.”
Sunbury’s second side got up 18-0 to further move away from the relegation zone. Three of Sunbury’s six teams won on Saturday.
The club men’s singles championships has been postponed to this week.
In Central Highlands Division top grade, Gisborne and Kyneton had a cracker of a match that ended with the teams on 99 shots apiece.
In a scoreline that read 99 (11)-99 (7), Gisborne won three rinks to one to get the win, extending the gap between the two teams, which are third and fourth.
Ladder-leader Kyneton Golf easily accounted for Romsey, winning 99 (16)-71 (2), while Bacchus Marsh Gold kept the pressure on Golf by defeating Lancefield 90 (15)- 81 (3).
Trentham smashed Bacchus Marsh Blue in the other match.
In division 2, Diggers Rest was too good for Kyneton, Gisborne Red beat Macedon, Kyneton Gold smashed Lancefield and Woodend easily accounted for Gisborne Yellow.
