Sunbury has closed the gap on top side Moonee Valley in a fruitful double-header across the weekend in Bowls Victoria Pennant, division 1, section 1.

Sunbury started the weekend with a convincing win against Melton on Saturday.

Three of the four rinks were close all day, but Sunbury came away with the points and an 86 (18)-61 (0) victory.

Lee Wesley’s rink, which was the pick of the Sunbury rinks across the weekend, won 31-13. Carla Krizanic’s rink had a five-shot win and the rinks of Mark Cowan and Todd Trewarne had one shot wins.

It was a good day overall for Sunbury, with four of its six teams winning.

On Sunday, Sunbury was again on the road, this time facing Lalor.

Sunbury won 91 (16)-57 (2).

Wesley’s rink won 30-14, Trewarne’s rink won 28-8 and Mark Cowan’s rink won 26-11.

There was a rare loss for Krizanic’s rink, which went down 24-10, but it didn’t matter in the overall scheme of things.

With two convincing wins and Moonee Valley dropping its first match of the season on Saturday, second-placed Sunbury has closed the gap on the top side to 15 points.

Sunbury is 25 points clear of third-placed Fitzroy Victoria. Those two sides will play each other this weekend in the last round before the Christmas break.

Only two Sunbury teams won on Sunday.

It was a big week for Krizanic, who returned to the Sunbury team having won the Australian Championship women’s singles title in New South Wales.

Krizanic won the title after beating Northern Territory’s Shenayde Heldt 25-9 and Western Australia’s Kristina Krstic’s 25-18.
