Sunbury syncs the rinks

Sunbury has moved into the top four of Bowls Victoria’s Pennant division 1 section 1 for the first time this season.

Facing fourth-placed Melton, Sunbury showed no Christmas break hangover, winning 86 (16)-61 (2) on Melton’s synthetic green.

In a Sunbury line-up that was close to their strongest, Mark Cowan’s rink won 25-13, Brad Willoughby’s rink won 27-13 and Brad Janner’s rink won 19-14.

Sunbury’s David Glennon said Janner’s efforts were even more in impressive in view of his return from Bali being delayed until 2am on the morning of the game.

Carla Krizanic’s rink lost 21-15.

Glennon said the win was important in the context of the season, with both Sunbury and Melton fighting for finals spot.

Sunbury replaced Melton in the top four, moving to 114 points. Melton is now fifth on 103 points, and Glenroy is a further three points behind.

“Not many teams win at Melton on their green,” Glennon said. “So it was really good.

“Now we’re placing Altona Sports, which are eighth, at home – it gives a good chance to consolidate our spot in the top four.”

It was a good day for Sunbury with all six teams winning on the same day for the first time this season. With seven rounds remaining, five of the six sides are sitting in finals positions.

Meanwhile, it was a busy week at the Sunbury Bowling Club, which hosted an under-18 tournament between Victorian and South Australian teams.

Sunbury’s Lisa Trewarne and Mikayla Long were part of the Victorian girls’ team, which won 2-1.

Both girls won five of their six matches.
