For the second time this season, Sunbury and Essendon (2) weren’t able to be separated in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1.

The two teams played a 79 (9) draw in round six and on Saturday it was yet again an even contest as the result came down to the final bowl.

In the end, the teams had to settle for a 72 (9)-72 (9) draw.

Carla Krizanic’s rink of Elise Cowan, Lachie Morison and Paul Cullis was the standout for Sunbury with a big win, while Todd Trewarne’s rink got up by one shot.

Marc Bullows and Mark Cowan’s rinks both suffered big losses.

Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was rare to get one draw in a season, let alone two and both against the same side.

The result all but ends Sunbury’s top-two spot. While Sunbury could still mathematically make the top two, Glennon said it would be unlikely with three rounds remaining.

Sunbury remains in third spot and is 24 points clear of fourth and 33 clear of fifth-placed Essendon.

Glennon said the focus between now and the finals was to ensure they maintained their spot.

Three of Sunbury’s six sides won and all should avoid relegation this season.

This week the top side faces bottom side Darebin City.
