Sunbury has grabbed the points in a hard-fought Bowls Victoria pennant division 1 section 1 contest.
Coming off a disappointing first-up loss against Glenroy, Sunbury led for most of the contest against Melton.
Despite a comeback from Melton after the tea break Sunbury won the last three ends to secure a 79 (13)-74 (5) victory.
Mark Cowan led the only winning rink for Sunbury, winning 27-13, while Brad Janner’s rink finished 24-24.
Elise Cowan’s rink lost 17-11, while Carla Kriznanic lost rare consecutive rounds by going down 20-17.
Sunbury’s David Glennon said conditions were difficult, with the wind making it hard for everyone.
“We made five changes to the top side and they were significant changes, too,” he said.
“Carla’s game was very close and losing by three shots is easily enough covered. Brad’s got a three on the last end to split the points.
“It was a good response to the heavy defeat in round one.”
Among the changes was the naming of three of the Long family in their first team debut – Wayne, Mikayla and Paul.
It was a mixed weekend for the Sunbury teams, with four of the six teams claiming victory. The two losing teams were those that won in the opening week of the season, meaning all Sunbury teams sit 1-1 after two rounds.
The first team now faces Altona Sports on its synthetic green.
In Central Highlands Bowls, Trentham won its first match back in division 1.
In a match against last season’s premier, Kyneton Golf, there was nothing between the two teams all day with Trentham getting up 88 (14)-86 (4).
The result leaves Kyneton Golf without a win from its opening two matches.
Gisborne made it two from two with a comprehensive win against Woodend. Gisborne won all four rinks easily for a 127 (18)-83 (0) victory. The rink of Glenn Johnston jr enjoyed a second successive win of more than 14 shots. Darren Fletcher’s rink won by 19 shots.
All four rinks were one-sided in the match between Kyneton and Lancefield, with Lancefield winning three of the four rinks.
Lancefield won 107 (16)-98 (2), leaving it also undefeated. In the other match, Romsey was defeated by Bacchus Marsh 134 (17)-83 (1).
Diggers Rest, Kyneton, Kyneton Golf and Macedon won their division 2 matches. Kyneton, Lancefield, Romsey, Gisborne and Woodend won in division 3.
