Sunbury’s winning streak came to an end in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1.
Having won the past three rounds, Sunbury was hoping to make it a fourth straight win against second bottom side Werribee, to keep the pressure on the top four.
Instead Sunbury struggled, losing 81 (16)-70 (2). Brad Janner’s rink was the only one to get a win, 21-14. Elise Cowan’s rink lost 24-18 and Shane Trewarne’s rink lost 24-20. Deeon Dean, who stepped up to skip in the absence of fill-in skip Brad Willoughby, lost 19-11.
Both Mark Cowan and Carla Krizanic were away.
Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said, despite the ladder difference, it was always going to be a hard match to win at Werribee and, despite the loss, Sunbury sits sixth on the ladder in touch with the top four.
Two of the top five sides – Melton and Deer Park – also suffered losses at the weekend.
Glennon said the two pre-Christmas matches were important in the context of the season.
“We now have two home games,” he said. “We play Preston Reservoir, which is struggling. We then have Glenroy, which is fighting for a top four spot. If we can win both matches, we could be in the top four heading into Christmas.”
It was a mixed weekend for Sunbury’s sides with three teams getting wins. The second side had a 116 (18)-51 (0) win against Moonee Ponds and the third side is top of the ladder.
Meanwhile, Sunbury’s Carla Krizanic has added a world championship to her string of honours. Competing in New Zealand at the 2016 World Bowls Championships, Krizanic was part of the Jackaroos’ women’s fours teams, which defeated England in the final, 23-8. It’s her first world championship title.
Krizanic still has the triples event to come.
In the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s division 1, the top two sides had big wins to remain undefeated. Gisborne defeated Kyneton Golf, 110 (14)-78 (4), Lancefield won 126 (16)-65 (2) against Trentham, Romsey best Woodend, and Kyneton snuck home by one shot against Bacchus Marsh. In division 2, Diggers Rest, Gisborne Red, Kyneton Golf and Kyneton had wins.
