Sunbury Lions focused on recruitment

The Lions are looking for players to join James, Mick, Brad, Emma, Molly, Chloe and Simone.

Having added numbers to their senior men’s football side, the Sunbury Lions want to boost player levels in some of their other football and netball teams.

The club is hoping to attract more under-18.5 footballers, under-19 netballers and women and youth female footballers to the club for next season.

The Lions are also looking for game- day trainers.

Lions junior liaison officer Mark Ash says they currently have 13 confirmed under-18.5 players for next season.

“We already have a quality base of players including a number who are in the Calder Cannons squad who will know their fate in Feburary 2016, ”Ash said.

“There seems to be some hesitation by some capable players of making the step up into senior football. The program that’s run by senior coach Rick Horwood is second to none.

“We require a dedicated group of young men to fill the rest of the squad. All players are guaranteed to play regular football due to the club’s rotation policy.”

As well as players, the Lions under-18.5 side is in need of a coach with Jamie Bramble having stood down to support his son who is in the Cannons’ program.

The club is looking for someone with experience.

“Rick will take training until Christmas and will work with the under-18.5 coach,” Ash said.

“The role could be a good stepping stone for someone who has a big focus on junior development.”

On the women’s side, the club is looking for players for all four football squads.

With changes to the EDFL’s youth girls competition, the club wants to field under-12, under-15 and under-18 teams as well as a women’s side.

This year, it fielded only one junior side, an under-18 team

Girls coach Ron Sikora said there were players interested in all three age groups but not enough to field teams.

“We’re looking at about 16 to 17 girls split between the under-15 and under-18 teams,” Sikora said.

“There needs to be a bare minimum of 12 girls per team.”

The premiership-winning women’s side is also looking for players.

The women’s team will be promoted next season because of its domination this year in the west division despite struggling to field a full team in most games.
