Sunbury Kangaroos are the latest club to signal its intention to field a women’s football side next season.
With the AFL women’s competition underway, and expansion into more localised women’s and girl’s football leagues, female football is booming.
Kangaroos’ president Allan Walters said there had been some interest in setting up a side and the club is keen to get it up and going.
The club will hold an information session this week.
“We’re keen to find out what interest there is a for a side,” Mr Walters said. “We’ve already had eight or nine players interested in playing.
“We’re desperate to get it up and going. Players can be of any skill level, and it doesn’t matter if they haven’t played before.”
Walters said the club is still to decide whether it will enter the team in the AFL Goldfields or Essendon District Football League women’s competitions. The junior club is considering a youth girls’ side next season, with the two clubs looking to provide a pathway from junior to senior women’s football.
The women’s side is one of two new sides the Kangaroos are looking at next season. They are also keen to field a third senior men’s side, to ensure all senior players get a game each week.
This side will either play in the Essendon District Football League’s thirds competition or a new open age AFL Goldfields competition.
AFL Goldfields is considering a thirds competition next season, with several clubs expressing interest in fielding sides. The competition would be a 16-a-side semi-serious competition.
The EDFL has had a thirds competition for the last two seasons.
Like the Kangaroos, Diggers Rest has indicated it will be fielding a thirds side next season.
The Kangaroos women’s information session is on Wednesday, December 14.
The Kangaroos are also still looking for a netball co-ordinator and A-grade netball coach.
