Sunbury Kangaroos’ women’s side is on the move, with the team to play in the Essendon District Football League this year.
Having kicked off their football in the AFL Goldfields competition last season, the Kangaroos decided to change leagues during the off season.
Kangaroos coach Allan Walters said it was an easy decision to change competitions.
“We’ve definitely made the move so there is less travel,” he said.
“The girls last year expressed concerns about travelling to Ballarat every second week and we decided to put in for the EDFL and it’s come through.”
Walters said the new competition would provide some challenges.
The EDFL season kicks off on April 8 and will be a 14-round competition plus finals.
“Just like last year, it will be the great unknown again,” Walters said.
“We don’t know what we’re coming up against … I believe there is seven or eight new sides.”
Walters said they had managed to keep most of last year’s playing group, while picking up a few players.
He said they were still looking for players of any ability who wanted to join the side.
“We always welcome new players. Last season we had up to 29 girls on the list, but in the last final could only field 21 players due to injuries and travel.”
The side currently trains Monday and Thursday nights, but will move to Tuesday and Thursdays once the current cricket season is over.
