The Sunbury Kangaroos didn’t let the uncertainty of the competition distract them – recording their second big win in as many weeks in Essendon District Football League division 2.
The Kangaroos were scheduled to face Jacana, which forfeited the week before, and have it confirmed until Thursday night that the game was going ahead.
Once on the field, the Kangaroos continued their good form on the way to a 38.18 (246)-2.5 (17) win.
Kangaroos coach Anthony Leydin said planning for the game had been hampered.
“We didn’t know if there would be a match at all,” he said.
“We were led to believe there wouldn’t be reserves and then we found out there was two games.
“We didn’t know who was on the team sheet until just before the game.”
Nevertheless, Leydin was pleased with how his side went.
While acknowledging his side had played two undermanned sides the past two weeks, he said it had been good to put in four-quarter performances.
“We were disappointed with that earlier in the year a couple of times,” he said.
“Everyone is still getting to know each other and we’re still finding the right combinations.”
The Kangaroos’ forwards have enjoyed the past two weeks, notching up 125 scoring shots.
On Saturday, Mick Kilty kicked eight goals and Lachlan Baddeley seven.
Tie Cuffe, Brad Slater and Josh Burgess all kicked five goals each.
Leydin said the spread of goalkickers was impressive.
“We’re not overly reliant on any one,” he said. “Our midfielders are kicking goals … and even some of our defenders are cashing in.”
Leydin said Cuffe was clearly best on ground in a sensational performance.
Kilty, Baddeley, Brenton Sutherland, David House and Matt Quigley were the other standouts.
In a pleasing sign for the Kangaroos, a couple of players returned from injury in the reserves.
Michael Spooner kicked 12 goals and Mitchell Kook kicked four goals in his first game of the season.
The seniors’ win takes the Kangaroos to 5-0.
This week they will face Burnside Heights, which also has a 5-0 record.
“We’ve had a couple of soft wins against teams that are undermanned and have been high-scoring affairs,” Leydin said.
“We can feel good about ourselves, but we need to have a clear focus next week.
“We’ll see where we are at the next month when we face some of the teams close to us on the ladder.”
A late comeback from East Sunbury fell short against the Northern Saints in a 13.17 (95)-12.11 (83) defeat.
